Read this before you purchase travel insurance for your next trip

Are you in the process of planning a trip and trying to decide whether travel insurance is worth the additional cost?  Read the fine print and be sure that the coverage actually protects you!  Hint…in many policies a pandemic is NOT covered.

So perhaps you found some cheap plane tickets after reading our August 25 post.  Now you need to decide – should I purchase travel insurance for my upcoming trip?  People purchase travel insurance to cover a variety of unforeseen events such as death in the family, illness, terrorist attacks or storms.  But does travel insurance cover COVID?

In many cases, travel insurance is not designed to cover a pandemic or the fear of traveling that comes with a pandemic, though it does cover illness that would prevent you from traveling.

Travel insurance is intended to cover travelers in the case of unforeseen events.  But when the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, it was no longer considered an unforeseen event.  And people who purchased travel insurance AFTER March 11 have had claims denied because the event was foreseen and COVID-19 was now a known peril.

Some insurance companies are rewording their policies to cover COVID-19 but this change does come at a premium.  If considering purchasing travel insurance for an upcoming trip be certain to read the fine print and ask questions.  To learn more, click here
